AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler Applauds Critical Protections for Mine Workers from Deadly Silica Exposure

AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler released the following statement on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA’s) final rule on respirable crystalline silica exposure:

In a definitive step toward safeguarding the health and well-being of our nation's miners, we applaud President Biden for issuing a final rule to protect coal and metal and non-metal miners. For too long, these miners and construction workers at mine sites have suffered debilitating and permanent lung diseases, including silicosis, because of their jobs that power our nation.

Today's final rule is another victory in the century-long battle against silica in the workplace, which affects working people across industries. Strong standards, however, must be met with strong enforcement to hold employers accountable, and MSHA must ensure workers are not forced to work when mines are deemed unsafe. No worker should ever be compelled to compromise our health or safety for a paycheck. Healthier work environments also affirm the inherent value of every miner's life and livelihood.

We extend our deepest appreciation to acting Labor Secretary Julie Su for her resolute leadership, recognizing the urgent need to provide mine workers with lifesaving protections. Today marks a significant milestone in our journey toward a safer and more equitable future for all.
