AFL-CIO: Congress Don’t Break Workers Hearts with Bad Trade Deals

Labor federation sending Congress Valentine’s Day Messages on Trade

(February 12, 2015) In honor of Valentine’s Day, the AFL-CIO is sending Members of Congress a special message urging them to reject “Fast Track” Trade Promotion Authority (also known as TPA).

The Valentine’s Day cards, which will begin arriving in lieu of chocolate on Thursday in Members of Congress’ inboxes and twitter feeds, are automobile themed. Their romantic message ranges from “Let’s get our signals straight, stop fast track” to “You’ve been driving me crazy with your fast track talk. You auto stop it or you’ll brake my heart,” to “You’re just my speed when you stop fast track.”

“Millions of jobs and decent wages are on the line and working people need Congress to show them some love,” said AFL-CIO trade policy expert Celeste Drake. “We can’t afford to give the administration Fast Track authority and pave the way for another bad trade deal that lowers wages and undermines labor, food safety and environmental standards.”
