Time to Derail Norwegian Airline Scheme

Congress may be on break, but this month the Obama administration faces a watershed decision with huge implications for the global aviation industry and its workforce.

By Aug. 31, the Department of Transportation (DOT) must rule on Norwegian Air International’s (NAI) application for an exemption that would allow it to begin transatlantic service in the U.S. before it has formally been granted a permit to do so. If approved, the exemption would allow NAI to move forward with a low-road operating model that will undermine good jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. It is time for our government to derail this scheme.

San Francisco Taxi Workers Vote to Unionize

San Francisco taxi drivers last week voted to form the San Francisco Taxi Workers Alliance (SFTWA) and affiliate with the National Taxi Workers Alliance (NTWA). They are the second group of taxi workers in recent weeks to join with NTWA following the Montgomery County (Md.) Professional Drivers Union’s affiliation.

New Jersey State AFL-CIO Candidates School Graduates Largest Class

A record-size class of 37 rank-and-file union members, representing 23 local unions from across all sectors of the labor movement, took part in the 18th annual New Jersey State AFL-CIO Labor Candidates School Aug. 9–10 at the Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center in New Brunswick.
