Statement by AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney on  Divisive Attempts to Pursue Fast Track Legislation
September 27, 2001

We are deeply disturbed by the opportunistic attempts of some in Washington, D.C. to use the tragedies in New York and at the Pentagon as the rationale for pursuing fast track trade legislation.

Some in the business community, along with Ways and Means Committee Chairman Thomas and Trade Ambassador Robert Zoellick, are attempting to use this moment to try to build the case for fast track now.

Their arguments are ludicrous and offensive, implying that those who don’t support this overwhelmingly partisan fast track proposal now are somehow protectionist, isolationist, or worse yet, unwilling to fight against terrorism.

We strongly support stimulating the U.S. economy and responding to the tragedies of September 11, but fast track does nothing to achieve either of those aims.  Fast track was controversial prior to the recent tragedies, and it would not have passed in the Congress.  Pursuing the Thomas fast track approach at this time will erode the sense of cooperation and spirit of bipartisanship that we want to see our country and its leaders continue to take-not only on this issue, but on other issues, as well.

Since September 11, our hearts, minds and work have been focused on responding to the tragedies and rebuilding our economy.  But we will not hesitate to respond with all the resources we can muster in order to defeat this shameful and deeply divisive attempt to pass fast track.
