It is impossible to put into words the sense of loss and anger the AFL-CIO and its members feel in the wake of the terrorist attacks this week. Our thoughts and prayers remain with those who died or were injured and with their families, and we stand fully behind the President and our leaders as they respond to these unprecedented acts.
At a time such as this, it is important that all Americans come together as one family. As one family, we must do everything that we can to prevent acts of prejudice against our fellow Americans based on racial, ethnic, or religious stereotypes. This attack was a terrorist attack, not an attack by any religious or ethnic group. Unfortunately, there are already numerous reports across our country of attacks on innocent Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, and South Asian Americans-attacks that are inconsistent with the fundamental ideals of our society.
We join with the President and other political, religious and community leaders in calling upon all Americans to renew their commitment to tolerance and compassion for their neighbors at this most difficult time. And we call upon our nation’s leaders to set an example by ensuring the safety of all, irrespective of race or ethnicity or religion, who might be the targets of harassment and violence. We are all angry; let our anger be directed at the real enemy-the terrorists and those who supported them who must be brought to justice.
