Statement by AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney on Passage of Fast Track Trade Legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives
July 27, 2002

The U.S. House of Representatives showed a disturbing disregard for America's working men and women this morning when it bowed to corporate pressure and passed the Fast Track trade legislation, a decision which will cost millions of family-supporting jobs at a time when America's workers are already struggling in the wake of corporate wrong-doing and greed.

Many long-time Republican opponents of Fast Track voted for it under intense pressure from the Bush Administration.  Every member of the House who voted to put jobs on a Fast Track to nations where corporations routinely exploit workers' rights, child labor and the environment should be deeply ashamed, and working people will hold them accountable for their decision in November.
