Statement by AFL-CIO President John Sweeney On Congressman McCrery’s Call to Make Privatizing Social Security a Top Priority
June 07, 2006

Jim McCrery, the Louisiana Congressman who hopes to become Chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee if the Republicans retain control of the Congress after the next election, revealed the Republicans’ real agenda today, telling reporters at the Chamber of Congress that Congress should make privatizing Social Security its top priority in 2007.

McCrery spilled the beans about a topic Republicans have avoided discussing in the 2006 elections. They know the American people--in overwhelming numbers-- rejected the President’s ill-conceived scheme to privatize the nation’s most successful family protection program. The American people made clear they don’t want to replace Social Security’s guaranteed benefits with risky private accounts that would force drastic cuts in middle class benefits and saddle future generations with trillions in federal debt.

It seems President Bush and his right wing allies in Congress march to their own relentless drum beat when it comes to dismantling the retirement security of America’s working families – and serving the interests of Wall Street.
