Statement by AFL-CIO President John Sweeney on Changes to Strengthen the Labor Movement
March 02, 2005

I’m pleased that the AFL-CIO Executive Committee gave us a mandate to move ahead with a plan that increases the labor movement’s investment in helping workers organize, and greatly expands our grassroots mobilization for political and legislative change.

The bottom line is how we build a stronger labor movement to help workers in this country.  The assault on living standards is the worst in history, and we’re united in our determination to repel it.

Unless we change the anti-worker policies that are destroying good jobs and stop the forces – from the NLRB to state governments – that are rolling back workers’ rights, we can’t win gains for workers.  A long-term plan for greater political and legislative mobilization is essential to strengthen and build the labor movement.

That’s why the Executive Committee is recommending a proposal that combines an approach to raise new resources for organizing as well as an urgently needed investment in long-term political mobilization.
