Jan. 9—As the Senate debates the Bush administration nomination of Judge Samuel Alito for Supreme Court associate justice, an AFL-CIO review of Alito’s record outlines the grave threat to working families posed by his nomination.
In opposing Alito’s nomination, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney wrote U.S. senators in December that Alito’s record as a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit reveals “a disturbing tendency to take an extremely narrow and restrictive view of laws that protect workers’ rights.”
Sweeney called on senators to “make a clear statement to the Bush administration that only those nominees who have a demonstrated record in support of workers’ fundamental rights will be confirmed to sit on our country’s highest court for life.”
