Straight Facts About Our Candidates

U.S. House of Representatives, Vermont, District 1

PETER WELCH  WILL FIGHT FOR WORKING FAMILIES

Advocates for Our Health Care. Peter Welch helped pass Vermont's health care reform legislation, which will expand health insurance to 30,000 of the state's uninsured. He proposed the Small Employers Health Benefits Program a program to lower prices on prescription drugs and improve access to Medicare. (Associated Press, 6/19/06; Montpelier-Barre Times Argus, 6/20/06)

Fights for Workers. Peter Welch voted to stop privatization of state services and to increase funding for state employee raises. He also fought to consolidate state employee pension boards and to reduce costs to ensure the security of our pensions. (S. 34, Vote #3, 3/15/06; H. 117, 5/24/05)

Protects Seniors. Peter Welch called for overhauling the flawed Medicare prescription drug program. “This program fails on the two most critical issues to Vermonters: simplicity and cost.” (Montpelier-Barre Times Argus, 8/16/06)

MARTHA RAINVILLE HAS FAILED WORKING FAMILIES

Will Increase Health Care Costs. Martha Rainville supports health savings accounts, which increases insurance premiums for working families and shift costs—and risks—onto workers. ( Burlington Free Press, 7/23/06)

Will Send Our Jobs Overseas. Martha Rainville supports free trade agreements that send our jobs overseas. She said Vermont has benefited from free trade agreements with Canada and that outsourcing has created jobs (can we say that they haven’t?). (Brattleboro Reformer, 2/15/06; Guardian, 2/17/06)

Will Ignore Medicare’s Flaws. Martha Rainville supports the flawed Medicare prescription drug program that penalizes our seniors and gives billions to the big drug companies. (Burlington Free Press, 8/23/06)
