Key Issues in Ohio

On June 30, Ohio's minimum wage increased to $5.15. This increase was passed by those opposed to a minimum wage increase to prevent a real increase being put on this November’s ballot. Opponents of the increase say it’s bad for business; but a study by Policy Matters Ohio and the Center for American Progress found just the opposite.

Union activists and members of the community have been campaigning for an initiative to be added to the ballot to raise the minimum wage to $6.85. The campaign needed 322,899 signatures to place the measure on the 2006 General Election ballot.

On Aug. 8, Ohioans for a Fair Minimum Wage turned in 765,000 signatures—the most signatures ever turned in for a ballot initiative in Ohio’s history—to the Secretary of State office to put the initiative on this fall's ballot.

Learn more about the campaign to raise the minimum wage in Ohio and how you can help.
