Ohio Governor

TED STRICKLAND  WILL FIGHT FOR WORKING FAMILIES

Supports Raising the Minimum Wage.
Ted Strickland believes raising the minimum wage is “the right thing to do” and voted to increase the federal minimum to $6.15 an hour in 2000. (The Plain Dealer, 5/11/06; H.R. 3846, 3/9/00)

Supports Our Freedom to Form Unions.
Ted Strickland supports workers’ rights to form unions free from employer intimidation, and he is a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act. (H.R. 1696, 7/22/05)

Defended Prevailing Wage Laws.
Ted Strickland co-sponsored a bill to reinstate the Davis-Bacon prevailing wage law after the Bush administration
waived it for workers cleaning up the Gulf Coast region after Hurricane Katrina. He told union members that as governor, “the prevailing wage will be the standard in Ohio.” (H.R. 3763, 9/14/05; Press release, 4/5/06)

KEN BLACKWELL HAS FAILED WORKING FAMILIES

Opposes Raising the Minimum Wage.
Blackwell said raising the minimum wage is “an ill-conceived idea.” (The Plain Dealer, 5/11/06)

Will Weaken Our Collective Bargaining Rights.
Blackwell proposed rolling back collective bargaining rights for public employees, calling collective bargaining laws “unruly.” Blackwell also bragged to the Association of Builders and Contractors, “I am the only right-to-work candidate.” (Dayton Daily News, 10/3/97; Association of Builders and Contractors’ Political Party Line, 2/2006)

Will Roll Back Prevailing Wage Laws and Project Labor Agreements.
Ken Blackwell said, “I am in 100 percent agreement with prevailing wage repeal and prohibition against union-only project labor agreements.” He also wants to extend prevailing wage exemptions to higher-education construction projects.
