Straight Facts About Our Candidates

CHET CULVER WILL FIGHT FOR WORKING FAMILIES

Will Create Good Jobs With Good Benefits. Chet Culver will make the creation and retention of good jobs with good wages a top priority for Iowa workers. He supports project labor agreements and prevailing wages for construction workers and is “very concerned good-quality, paying jobs are diminishing out there.” (2006 Iowa Federation of Labor candidate survey; Sioux City Journal, 8/18/05)

Will Fight for Affordable Health Care. Chet Culver will fight for affordable health care: “Too many Iowa families are being squeezed by skyrocketing health care costs.” (The Associated Press, 3/1/06; The Des Moines Register, 5/14/06)

Will Protect Seniors. Chet Culver knows “a good job doesn’t just provide protection for a worker’s family today—it allows the worker to safeguard the family’s future.” He has a plan to make sure more jobs provide retirement security. (www.chetculver.com)

JIM NUSSLE HAS FAILED WORKING FAMILIES

Attacked Our Jobs, Wages and Benefits. Jim Nussle voted to send our jobs overseas with CAFTA—resulting in the loss of thousands of good manufacturing jobs. He refused to support reinstating Davis-Bacon community wage standards for workers cleaning up after Hurricane Katrina and voted against unemployment benefits for Iowa workers. (CAFTA, H.R. 3045, Vote #443, 7/28/04; Iowa Policy Project, 2005; H.R. 3763, 2005; H.R. 3030, Vote #18, 2/4/04)

Increased Costs of Health Care. Jim Nussle voted to increase insurance premiums for working families and voted for health saving accounts that shift costs—and risks—onto workers. (H.R. 525, Vote #426, 7/26/05; The Des Moines Register, 5/14/06)

Raided the Social Security Trust Fund. Jim Nussle voted against protecting pension benefits for more than 120,000 United Airlines workers. He also voted to raid $1.1 trillion from the Social Security Trust Fund. (H.R. 3010, Vote #309, 6/26/06; H.C.R. 95, Vote #88, 3/17/05)
