HEALTH CARE FOR THE UNINSURED

47 million Americans have no health insurance, and millions more wouldn't have protection without Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP and other government assistance programs. If you don’t have health insurance, these sites may help you get coverage.

Learn more about the campaign to get health coverage for the uninsured at CoveringTheUninsured.org.

Find out whether you qualify for free or low cost health insurance through the Foundation for Health Coverage Education.

Medicaid

Medicaid is the primary source for health care assistance for low-income families without health insurance. The Resource Guide to Medicaid provides direct links to the Medicaid programs of all the 50 states.

For Medicare Beneficiaries

Most states have other health care assistance programs aimed at helping low-income children, seniors, people with disabilities and others. Find out more about your state's health care programs through FamiliesUSA's index to state-specific information.

Health Care for Children

Low-cost or free health insurance is available in almost every state for America's children through the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Learn how to qualify for the SCHIP program and find information about its availability in your state at the Insure Kids Now website.

Prescription Drug Assistance Programs

Many states have programs that provide assistance with prescription drug costs to primarily senior citizens and disabled individuals who have low or modest incomes. Most of the programs are aimed at those who do not qualify for Medicaid. A list of the State Senior Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs and who is eligible for assistance is available at the National Conference of State Legislatures website.

Many pharmaceutical companies offer prescription drugs to individuals in need who cannot otherwise afford them. Visit the Directory of Prescription Drug Patient Assistance Programs sponsored by the member companies of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

A similar Online Resource on Pharmaceutical Patient Assistance Programs is operated by Volunteers in Health Care, a national, nonprofit program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
