Letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Urging Support for the Confirmation of Loretta Lynch

Dear Chairman Grassley and Ranking Member Leahy:

I am writing on behalf of the AFL-CIO to urge swift confirmation of United States Attorney Loretta E. Lynch as Attorney General of the United States. Ms. Lynch has had a distinguished career that makes her uniquely qualified to become our nation’s top law enforcement official and lead the Department of Justice at this critical time. She is a stellar nominee and deserves confirmation.

Ms. Lynch is currently serving a second tour of duty as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and in that capacity has earned a reputation for managing effective criminal prosecutions. She has judiciously marshaled the resources of her office to protect every sector of our society, and is widely recognized for her effective leadership. Ms. Lynch has also demonstrated the capacity to develop consensus and has won support from all those who have been involved with her work.

While Ms. Lynch has an impressive academic resume and could well have chosen a lucrative career in the private sector, she has instead developed an exemplary record of public service. She has worked with law enforcement officers and Department of Justice staff for decades, and served for years as Chair of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee. Through these experiences she has gained extensive knowledge of the budgetary, enforcement, and policy challenges facing the Department of Justice and is well prepared to serve as Attorney General.

The independence and objectivity of United States Attorney Loretta Lynch has been uniformly praised, and not a single witness opposed her confirmation during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on her nomination. The AFL-CIO urges confirmation of United States Attorney Loretta E. Loretta for Attorney General of the United States.

Sincerely,

William Samuel, Director
Government Affairs Department
