Fire Fighters and Nationwide Insurance Partner to Make Trick-or-Treat Tradition Safer for Children

The Fire Fighters (IAFF) and Nationwide Insurance announced a new partnership through Nationwide’s Make Safe Happen program. The two organizations are teaming up to make Halloween safer in communities across North America. Through the partnership, the IAFF and Nationwide distributed 25,000 trick-or-treat bags to families, along with important safety tips.

The latest post in our Innovation @Work section takes a look at a successful, and growing, program in Chicago that helps screen firefighters for cancer—using trained Canadian dogs.

The firehouse dog has long kept watch over the fire trucks (and, before that, fire horses) and has been the faithful companion riding alongside the firefighters on their way to save lives. But now dogs are being used in an innovative way to save the lives of the firefighters.

No Fancy Commercials, but Super Bowl is Brought to You by Union Members

Sunday was the first outdoor, cold weather site Super Bowl in the game’s 48-year history. The frigid weather in the weeks leading up to the game didn't  stop the thousands of union members who brought you the game. On the scene at MetLife Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands or behind the scenes at many facilities in the Metro New York-New Jersey area, union members made the nation’s national party day possible.

Orr Takes Immediate Aim at Pensions After Judge OKs Detroit Bankruptcy

A federal bankruptcy judge today ruled that the city of Detroit is eligible for bankruptcy protection and may cut pension benefits for retired city workers despite a provision in the state’s Constitution banning such pension cuts. Attorneys for city workers, firefighters and police officers say they will appeal the judge’s ruling.

Real Men (and Women) Wear Pink

Firefighters are dedicated to saving lives, and not just when responding to an emergency. Throughout October, America’s professional firefighters are sporting the color pink in campaigns to fight breast and other cancers. As part of this effort, the Fire Fighters (IAFF) union is going Passionately Pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to support Susan G. Komen in its mission to end breast cancer.
