Innovation @Work: The Nose Knows

The latest post in our Innovation @Work section takes a look at a successful, and growing, program in Chicago that helps screen firefighters for cancer—using trained Canadian dogs.

The firehouse dog has long kept watch over the fire trucks (and, before that, fire horses) and has been the faithful companion riding alongside the firefighters on their way to save lives. But now dogs are being used in an innovative way to save the lives of the firefighters.

Massachusetts Fire Fighters Sing 'Let It Go' to Calm a Scared Girl Stuck in an Elevator

Members of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1640 of Reading, Mass., not only rescued a four-year-old girl, her mom and younger brother from being stuck in an elevator, but they serenaded her with the song "Let It Go" from the movie "Frozen" to alleviate her fears.

No Fancy Commercials, but Super Bowl is Brought to You by Union Members

Sunday was the first outdoor, cold weather site Super Bowl in the game’s 48-year history. The frigid weather in the weeks leading up to the game didn't  stop the thousands of union members who brought you the game. On the scene at MetLife Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands or behind the scenes at many facilities in the Metro New York-New Jersey area, union members made the nation’s national party day possible.

Orr Takes Immediate Aim at Pensions After Judge OKs Detroit Bankruptcy


A federal bankruptcy judge today ruled that the city of Detroit is eligible for bankruptcy protection and may cut pension benefits for retired city workers despite a provision in the state’s Constitution banning such pension cuts. Attorneys for city workers, firefighters and police officers say they will appeal the judge’s ruling.

Real Men (and Women) Wear Pink

Firefighters are dedicated to saving lives, and not just when responding to an emergency. Throughout October, America’s professional firefighters are sporting the color pink in campaigns to fight breast and other cancers. As part of this effort, the Fire Fighters (IAFF) union is going Passionately Pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to support Susan G. Komen in its mission to end breast cancer.

Fallen Firefighters Honored

More than 5,000 people honored the lives of 157 firefighters and paramedics who died in the line of duty during the past year at the 27th annual Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial service in Colorado Springs on Sept. 21. As each fallen firefighter’s name was called, a bell was rung and family members were presented with ceremonial folded flags.

FireOps Course Highlights Demands of Job, Dangers of Sequestration

Fire Fighters (IAFF)  Local 230 invited elected officials and attendees of Netroots Nation, a conference for progressives and activists, to take part in a basic firefighting class at its training facility in San Jose, Calif. Participants climbed ladders, operated fire hoses and Jaws of Life, performed CPR and navigated through a warren of dark, tight corridors—all while wearing full firefighting gear.

19 Firefighters Killed Battling Arizona Wildfire

Nineteen Arizona firefighters, 18 from an elite wildfire unit, were killed Sunday in an out-of-control blaze about 80 miles north of Phoenix. The members of the Prescott Fire Department’s Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew team were dispatched to the front lines of the Yarnell Hill fire to establish a fire line to try to slow fire that reportedly had wind-driven flames as high as 20 feet.
