Women are coming together and improving their workplaces by fighting for policies that include everything from raising the tipped and minimum wage, making equal pay for equal work a reality, demanding more consistent and adequate hours in retail scheduling to making sure everyone has access to affordable child care and can receive basic workplace accommodations during pregnancy. These women workers know collective bargaining and collective action are important for achieving workplace policies that work for women and families.

When workers at Walmart began mobilizing to make changes at the world’s biggest employer—one with the deserved reputation of disrespecting its workers and slapping down any attempt by workers to influence workplace policies—most folks’ initial reaction was “well, good luck with that.”

But it wasn’t good luck that brought about some recent workplace changes at Walmart.

In addition to the many other benefits we've spotlighted about raising the minimum wage, a new report released by the AFL-CIO today finds that raising the minimum wage would help millions of African American families. The report, which is based on Economic Policy Institute data, shows that African Americans often live in a state of economic insecurity and that raising the minimum wage would be an effective way to counter that insecurity for some 4 million African Americans.

Mythopedia Will Help You School Your Right-Wing Uncle's Lies About Unions

On Wednesday, Media Matters for America launched a new website, Mythopedia, that presents rebuttals to common right-wing lies and distortions in a way that anyone can understand, including a section on spin and lies about unions. The site is searchable and simple to use in multiple formats, including desktop, smartphone or tablet, and will be updated frequently.
