SPEEA Wins Boeing Case, Workers to Split $47 Million

Nearly 500 current and former Boeing Co. employees who worked at two Southern California plants will share in a $47 million award after an arbitrator agreed with the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA)/IFPTE Local 2001 that the company wrongfully denied the workers union representation in 2001.

The 4 (or 5) Worst Market Failures in Human History

I'm a capitalist for one reason: to raise living standards in my community. A familiar mantra of capitalism guides me: Markets are powerful and efficient.

I'm also a realist, so I temper that mantra: Markets are powerful and efficient. And markets fail.

Market failure is an established, well-understood field of study in mainstream economics. Generations of economists accept the basics of market failure.

However, American economists turn their heads away at the mention of it, because it sounds like heresy.

Wooing Boeing: We Don’t Do Better if We All Do Worse

Washington State has a world-class aerospace cluster, employing more than 130,000 people making products the rest of the world wants to buy. In 2003, the Boeing Co. cast a chill on the state, moving its headquarters to Chicago. In 2009, the chill deepened with the decision to assemble some 787s in South Carolina.

SPEEA Technical Workers Approve Boeing Pact

The technical workers at the Boeing Co.’s Northwest facilities have voted to approve a new four-year contract, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA)/IFPTE Local 2001 announced Monday night.  

Last month, the technical workers narrowly voted to reject the tentative contract, while the professional workers unit of engineers approved their contract. This latest vote, said SPEEA, was on the same pact the technical workers previously rejected.

Flight Attendants Push for Equal Benefits for Domestic Partners

Flight attendants who work for Spirit Airlines filed a lawsuit against the airline for reneging on a contractual commitment to provide equal benefits for all employees by forcing employees who want health care coverage for their domestic partners into a lower-quality health care plan than the plan covering other employees. The flight attendants, members of the Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA), said that management is using procedural loopholes to avoid providing equal benefits.
