This Saturday, Oct. 5, a broad and diverse coalition of immigrant, faith, labor, civil rights and family groups will march and rally in more than 80 actions across the nation and call on Congress to pass immigration reform with a road map to citizenship that promotes family unity and protects workers’ rights.

McCain: Path to Citizenship Must Be ‘Fundamental Element’ of Immigration Reform

Pointing to the “broad spectrum of support” from faith, labor and business groups that have lined up to support comprehensive immigration reform that includes a road map to citizenship, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told the AFL-CIO Citizenship 2013 forum today, “I am confident we can prevail.”

McCain and Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) kicked off the forum (we will bring more coverage later today) with a question-and-answer session at the AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, D.C., about the bill’s prospects in the House after bipartisan (68–32) passage in the U.S. Senate

Join Us for a Conversation on Citizenship

While a comprehensive immigration reform bill has been moving through Congress this year, the nation has had a conversation about citizenship. That conversation comes directly to the AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, July 30, with a special forum on immigration and citizenship with several prominent participants, including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

Through Art, Inside Out/11m Celebrates Nation’s Legacy of Immigration

There is no single face that makes up the American portrait. A true picture of the nation is made of a wide and diverse population, almost all of whose families at one time were immigrants.  

Now a unique three-day, outdoor art exhibit in Washington, D.C., will celebrate America’s history of immigration and rally support for a road map to citizenship for our neighbors, friends, co-workers and loved ones.

Senate Passes Immigration Reform Bill

The U.S. Senate just voted 68–32 (with 14 Republicans joining all 54 Democrats) to approve immigration reform legislation that AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says will move the nation “a big step closer” to building a commonsense immigration system that will allow millions of aspiring Americans to become citizens. 

Now it is up to the House of Representatives to follow the Senate’s lead by allowing a majority of House members to vote on a bill with a road map to citizenship.

AFL-CIO Backs Amended Senate Immigration Bill, But Road to Citizenship Must Not Be Further Compromised

UPDATE—In a 67-27 vote this evening the Senate moved closer to final passage of a comprehensive immigration reform bill when senators voted to end debate on an amendment to the bill. The vote included 15 Republicans and all Democratic lawmakers.

The Senate is expected to hold a key vote today on an amended comprehensive immigration reform bill that maintains a road map to citizenship for aspiring Americans, but also contains changes Republicans demanded to move the legislation forward. We will bring you the results of that vote as soon as it occurs. A vote on final passage is expected this week.

30,000 Say ‘The Time Is Now’ for Commonsense Immigration Reform

As the bipartisan Gang of Eight continues to draft comprehensive, commonsense immigration policy legislation, thousands of activists, families and supporters of all ages and nationalities flooded the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday for the “April 10: The Time Is Now” rally for immigration policy reform with a road map to citizenship.
