Rand Paul and Republicans Love Tax Evasion and Offshore Havens

On Friday, the Republican National Committee passed a resolution calling for a repeal of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), effectively endorsing offshore tax evasion. FATCA was passed in 2010 and requires foreign banks to report deposit information on account holders from the United States, a requirement that U.S. banks must comply with. The purpose of the law is to prevent U.S. citizens from evading taxes by stashing their money in offshore accounts. If the repeal became law, Global Financial Integrity (GFI), a nonpartisan research and advocacy organization, projects that the U.S. budget deficit would balloon by billions of dollars.

Supreme Court Upholds Restriction on RNC Program that Supresses the Vote in Communities of Color

Photo from a voter registration event in Philadelphia.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to lift 30-year restrictions on a Republican National Committee (RNC) program that intimidates voters in communities of color. The Supreme Court did not comment on this decision.

The restriction came about after the Democratic National Committee (DNC) sued the RNC for enlisting off-duty sheriffs and police officers to patrol polling places in minority precincts in New Jersey during a 1981 gubernatorial election. The next year, the RNC agreed not to carry out some programs it claimed were designed to combat voter fraud and to have the other reviewed by a federal court.

Tell Us What You Think: Democratic vs. Republican Platforms…Where Do Workers Win?

Last week, we discussed that the Republican Party platform is a road map to dismantle workers’ rights. Steven Greenhouse of The New York Times says the Republican platform “calls for numerous steps that could significantly weaken America’s labor unions” and, for the first time in years, doesn’t even acknowledge the right to form unions.

The New York Times reports, when doing a side-by-side comparison of the platforms, the two visions are “poles apart in their view of the nation.”

Let’s take a look at some of the major differences:

RNC Convention Cleaners' Pay Dips Below Minimum Wage

In the aftermath of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., the GOP stuck with its principles regarding keeping low-paid workers, well, low paid.

The crew that cleaned up the convention hall last week—about 105 workers—included many whose take-home pay amounts to less than the state's minimum wage.

RNC Speech: Romney Can't Avoid Poor Record for Working Families

Tonight Mitt Romney tried to reinvent himself, appealing to Americans’ aspirations and hunger to come together while trying to show his personal side. But his policy proposals or record do not reflect the kind of America where working families get a fair shake. Whether it's proposing to cut back severely on Medicaid, forcing seniors on fixed incomes to pay more out of pocket for their health care or cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans, the Romney-Ryan budget doubles down on the failed economic policies that brought on the economic crisis in the first place.

He touted his business experience, despite his business record as an outsourcer. He called out divisiveness, despite proposals that would provide bigger income disparities and ignored Republican obstructionism for the past two years..

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Attacks Unions and Working Families in RNC Speech

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, in the same breath as praising the “greatest generation” who built factories, farms and taught our nation's children, attacked those workers’ right to join together to improve their workplaces and those they serve, during his Republican National Convention (RNC) speech last night.

Christie decided to bash teachers’ unions and public sector workers, instead of offering positive solutions to strengthen the U.S. economy.
