Virgin America Flight Attendants Vote to Join TWU

Presenting TWU's newest members...Virgin America Inflight Team Members (ITMs)!

On Wednesday, in a decisive 430 to 307 vote, the 900 flight attendants at Virgin America chose Transport Workers Union (TWU) membership and a brighter future for themselves and their families. In doing so, they made history at the airline. Until today, Virgin held the distinction of being the largest U.S. air carrier to have an entire workforce completely without union protections on the job. Said TWU President Harry Lombardo:

What’s Up with the New Southwest?

The 9,000 ground workers at Southwest Airlines—members of Transport Workers (TWULocal 555—have been working without a contract for three years. They report negotiations have made little progress on reaching an agreement. In this new video from TWU—"Profits Before People: The New Southwest Airlines"—workers talk about the change in culture at Southwest, the company’s take-back demands and what they hope to see in the new contract.

Watch TWU, ATU Members Rally for Jobs and Transit Funding

The Highway Trust Fund that helps states pay for transportation and transit construction and upkeep is running out of money and layoffs could begin in July. Late last month, more than 1,000 Transport Workers (TWU) and Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) members and their allies rallied on Capitol Hill to urge Congress to replenish the Highway Trust Fund and reauthorize the Surface Transportation Act. No Fancy Commercials, but Super Bowl is Brought to You by Union Members

Sunday was the first outdoor, cold weather site Super Bowl in the game’s 48-year history. The frigid weather in the weeks leading up to the game didn't  stop the thousands of union members who brought you the game. On the scene at MetLife Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands or behind the scenes at many facilities in the Metro New York-New Jersey area, union members made the nation’s national party day possible.

TWU Vets Bring Holiday Cheer to Wounded Warriors

Some 2,000 wounded soldiers, their spouses and children got a holiday boost this month when the Transport Workers Air Transport Division (TWU-ATD) Veterans Committee co-led the distribution of hundreds upon hundreds of holiday gifts and necessities at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Without a Contract, Some Storm Damage Remains for TWU Local 100

A little more than a year ago, Superstorm Sandy battered the East Coast and in New York City the powerful storm flooded subway tunnels, ripped up tracks, knocked down train signals and shut down the city’s transit system.

But within hours, members of Transport Workers (TWU) Local 100—then eight months without contract—were on the job around the clock bringing the system back to life, pumping tunnels and getting the city's trains and buses back in service. But while the transit system is back in business—with a $1.9 billion cash windfall—Local 100 members are still without a contract.

TWU Members Rally on Behalf of Contractless Flight Attendants at Allegiant

For two years now, the flight attendants at Allegiant Air have been without a contract. At a rally asking Allegiant to negotiate with the flight attendants in good faith, the crowd, led by the Transport Workers (TWU), chanted, "Two years is too long!"

Harry Lombardo Elected International President of the Transport Workers

Harry Lombardo Elected International President of the Transport Workers

Harry Lombardo, 64, was elected international president of the Transport Workers (TWU) at the union's convention in Las Vegas this week. 

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Lombardo replaced James C. Little, who headed the union since 2006.

TWU Launches Viral Video to Spread Awareness on Public Transit Safety

Skilled and alert operators prevent an unknown number of injuries and fatalities on New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) subway tracks each year. Yet in 2012, dozens of people died and scores of others suffered non-fatal injuries on MTA’s tracks. The workers who operate those trains decided to do something about it. They launched a campaign to influence MTA officials to improve track safety.
