BOOKS

Field Guide to the Global Economy now available at The Union Shop Online.™ What occupations are most at risk of being outsourced? What percent of the global market do each of the top 10 pharmaceutical firms control? What’s the impact of giant organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank on developing nations? The revised and updated Field Guide to the Global Economy answers these questions and more through fun charts, graphics and illustrated text. Authors Sarah Anderson and John Cavanaugh of the Institute for Policy Studies and Thea Lee, assistant director of the AFL-CIO Legislation Department, also provide answers to the question: What can we do to challenge unfair globalization policies? $17.95 paperback from The Union Shop Online.™

In The Charter School Dust-Up, researchers for the Economic Policy Institute debunk the myth that charter school students scored lower on standardized tests than students in public schools because they are harder-to-teach minorities. Drawing on data provided by the Bush administration, which long has backed charter schools, the authors show charter school students overall are not more disadvantaged, yet performed no better on standardized tests than their public school counterparts. $16.95 paperback from the Economic Policy Institute or Teachers College Press.

In The Impossible Will Take a Little While: A Citizen’s Guide to Hope in a Time of Fear, editor Paul Rogat Loeb brings together essays, poems and stories from more than 50 activists and political leaders. The inspirational writings serve as testaments to the importance and value of fighting for a more humane world, no matter how bleak the circumstances. $15.95 paperback from The Union Shop Online.™
