Toolbox: Taxpayers and Workers Subsidize Wal-Mart's Profits

Inglewood, Calif., voters recently rejected a Wal-Mart–sponsored ballot initiative that would have allowed a so-called Wal-Mart supercenter developed free of local and state planning review. Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest employer, provides low-wage and low-benefit jobs while destroying good middle-class jobs—and leaving taxpayers to pick up the financial pieces for its impoverished workers.
