Hear From OI Graduates

“I think it is imperative that this generation understands that they have a voice in their workplace. Currently we work under conditions that our grandparents would not have stood for. Even though most of us do not work in factories, we deserve the respect and rights of the working people. This generational gap is what led me to become an organizer.”
—Candace Castillo, 2006 OI graduate, United Teachers of New Orleans-AFT (UTNO-AFT) Organizing Campaign

“Working with the UAW at University of New Hampshire has given me the opportunity to work with people in many different job classifications. But I will always remember meeting a man who, after working in the university dining halls for 12 years, said he "couldn't afford to work there." The wages he earned were not enough for him to afford the health benefits offered by the university. Though each person has a unique story, what is true of all employees is that they want to be treated fairly and with respect. I believe helping people to organize gives them the opportunity to take more control of their working lives and empowers them to demand fair treatment in the workplace.”
—Allie Lupico, 2007 OI Graduate, Organizer, United Auto Workers (UAW)

“Working for a labor union has enabled me to bring social justice to others. I believe that labor unions bring a voice to those who otherwise would not have a voice. Playing a part in social justice is the most satisfying feeling I have had.”
—Tsika Pasipanodya, 2004 OI Graduate, Lead Organizer, AFSCME

“I have been fortunate enough to experience moments of greatness each day as I work in the Labor Movement. But, the most inspirational was when the classified employees at New Mexico State University finally won their union election after fighting for 3 long and turbulent years. The determination and endurance that brought their victory is what continues to inspire me to continue in this struggle.”
—Jedd Rivera, 2007 OI Graduate, Lead Organizer, San Antonio Federation of Teachers
