ILCA Honors Union Communicators

July 24—Dozens of union communicators were recognized for their efforts at the Media Contest Awards banquet July 23, part of the July 21–23 International Labor Communications Association's (ILCA's) 50th Anniversary Convention in Chicago.

Susan Ellen Holleran received the ILCA’s top media award, the 2005 Max Steinbock Award for her article “Health Care on Life Support,” in AFSCME’s Public Employee magazine. The article examined the nation’s health care crisis through the eyes of two workers on strike at the University of Minnesota who could not afford the health care premiums the school demanded. The Steinbock Award honors an outstanding journalistic effort that explores an issue of concern to working families.

Other top award winners include Nancy Romer of Professional Staff Congress/CUNY in New York, who won first in the Saul Miller award category for best organizing story; AFT’s American Teachers newspaper, which came in first in the general excellence category for papers with circulation of 100,000 or more; and Jennifer Tunney from United Food and Commercial Workers Local 175 in Mississauga, Canada, for general excellence in the website category.
