May 5—Residents in more than 10,000 communities in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands can help feed the hungry by taking part in the Letter Carriers 12th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday, May 8.
Just leave nonperishable food items in a box or bag near your mailbox. Letter Carriers from more than 1,500 NALC local branches will pick up the food donations, which will be delivered to local food banks, pantries and shelters. Food donations also can be dropped off at local post offices.
An estimated 30 million people face hunger every day in America, including some 12 million children.
“Many of the recipients are from working families—people who just need a helping hand to get through some tough times,” said NALC President William H. Young. “In the 2003 drive, letter carriers collected over 61 million pounds of donations, an incredible result. But this year we are determined to go even higher.” Since the NALC food drives began in 1993, more than half a billion pounds of food has been donated.
NALC, the U.S. Postal Service, the AFL-CIO, local United Way organizations, the Campbell Soup Co. and America’s Second Harvest sponsor the nation’s largest one-day food drive.
Young and U.S. Postmaster General John E. Potter were among the recipients who, on May 3, received the World Hunger Year–Chapin Award for easing hunger.
