Lifelong Activism: The Alliance for Retired Americans

Retired union workers become lifelong activists as members of the Alliance for Retired Americans, an AFL-CIO partner. Three million members strong, the Alliance works with unions nationally and at the state level in a grassroots movement providing a powerful voice for older Americans. With active union members and other community allies, they engage in important political battles to protect and preserve vital health and economic security programs for seniors.

Alliance members captured national attention to the devastating cost of prescription drugs in 2002—and saved about $1 million—by taking Rx Express buses to Canada to buy their medications there. More recently, Alliance members sent 70,000 hand-written letters to Congress in the successful fight to save Social Security from privatization—which would have cut benefits, raised the retirement age and swollen the national debt. Today, the Alliance is exposing the corrupt policies and politics that created the disastrous Medicare Part D drug benefit, which has left tens of thousands of poor elderly and disabled patients without needed prescription drugs and forced some 20 states to declare public health emergencies.
