This exhibition of posters and stills from 29 films focusing on workers' issues is one display at the AFL-CIO through November. It represents a range of Hollywood, independent and foreign films that incorporate workplace and organizing themes.

Jacob Lawrence: The Migration Series

The 20th-century migration of millions of blacks from the South to the North, many of whom swelled the ranks of the Auto Workers, Steelworkers, and other industrial unions, was famously captured by artist Jacob Lawrence. The powerful, brightly colored, deceptively simple images of train stations, people carrying their life possessions in their luggage, and industrial smokestacks in the background, makes this series a masterpiece.

Inspired by the lessons of history and his own experience, artist Jacob Lawrence depicted images of family, home and the streets of his community. His works encompass subjects both contemporary and historic, all illustrating such universal themes as the quest for freedom, justice and human dignity.
