The future for millions of young Americans got a little brighter today when the President announced his plan to ensure every student can afford to attend a quality community college. All public education should be free. No student should have to borrow against their future or risk becoming a victim of unscrupulous training programs or predatory for-profit colleges when they set out to achieve the American Dream.
The AFL-CIO applauds this effort to raise the wages of millions of Americans. Workers deserve a plan that is well-funded and properly supports faculty and staff to deliver the same high-quality education that a union apprentice receives: one that prepares them for a successful career and is provided by quality educators who are paid a living wage.
