What I Do
Christy McGill, Art Teacher - Divide Elementary School, Lookout, WV.
Working families welcome Attorney General Holder’s efforts to address a justice system weakened by unjust and disparate sentencing laws and the impact of mass incarceration.
Our ballooning prison population and economic policies that disadvantage our communities are two sides of the same coin. We have seen the devastating effects on communities around the country when mothers, fathers and loved ones become ensnared in our criminal justice system -- many for non-violent offenses. The impacts of mass incarceration have long ranging and long lasting effects, including depriving people of their right to vote, destroying access to good jobs and cutting off the American dream for many who already face socioeconomic barriers to opportunity. And communities of color, particularly African Americans and Latinos, are disproportionately imprisoned and remain stigmatized long after release.
The AFL-CIO, as a voice for working families, will continue to focus on this key barrier to economic prosperity for all and advocate for policies that make our criminal justice system fairer and more just.
