Senator Tom Harkin has been an extraordinarily committed, passionate, and effective Senator for working families throughout his long career. Working people will lose a once-in-a-lifetime champion in the United States Senate when Senator Tom Harkin retires in 2015. Even as he ends his fifth term, the longest serving Democratic Senator in Iowa’s history never forgot his roots in a coal mining immigrant family – much like my own upbringing. Whether on the battlefield in foreign lands or the floor of the U.S. Senate, Senator Harkin’s life has been dedicated to public service. Safeguarding workers’ pensions and funding for the Department of Labor, holding the torch for strengthening labor laws and shepherding the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Affordable Care Act, his career will  leave an incredibly powerful legacy for our country. Although his accomplishments will always resonate in the lives of America’s workers, his presence will undoubtedly be missed.
