What I Do
Christy McGill, Art Teacher - Divide Elementary School, Lookout, WV.
We applaud the leadership of College Athletes Players Association (CAPA) and the Northwestern University Football players who are organizing a union. Those players are standing up for themselves and each other in order to achieve the fair treatment all hard working people deserve. Under the system that the NCAA and its member institutions like Northwestern have established, college football and basketball are big business and treat athletes that way.
As Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter said, `Right now the NCAA is like a dictatorship. No one represents us in negotiations. The only way things are going to change is if players have a union.’
The lesson that strength comes from standing together is one Colter has learned fulfilling his 60 hour plus weeks as a football player, and it is true for all workers, whether they teach school, build Volkswagens in Chattanooga, or serve as home health care workers.
