Labor federation lauds congressional heroes for their key votes in 2013

(Washington, DC, April 1, 2014) – The AFL-CIO released its legislative scorecard today to grade how well senators and representatives served working families in 2013. The electronic voting record, which tracks where lawmakers stood on important issues for working families, was full of surprises. Sens. Ted Cruz, Ron Johnson, Mike Lee, Rand Paul and Tim Scott tied as the top champions for working families in the Senate.
“We want to thank Mitch McConnell for his responsible leadership in the Senate, and Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Tim Scott and Ron Johnson for standing with working families 100% of the time,” said AFL-CIO Government Affairs Director Bill Samuel. “Whether it was their role in preventing a government shutdown or their vocal support for delivering aid to devastated communities after Superstorm Sandy, working families are forever grateful to have their voices in the Senate.”
Added AFL-CIO Director of Communications Eric Hauser, “Working families also appreciate Speaker John Boehner and his productive and progressive House of Representatives. Speaker Boehner’s willingness to move beyond government dysfunction and pass landmark legislation was impressive. The House of Representatives’ success passing bills to create jobs and reform our broken immigration system will be remembered for generations. Working families appreciate how their champions channeled the concerns of the middle class and were not just puppets of the Tea Party and the 1%.”
In the Senate, the AFL-CIO tracked 18 votes, including aid to devastated communities after Superstorm Sandy and legislation to create jobs, end the government shutdown, pass comprehensive immigration reform and confirm nominees to the Labor Department and the National Labor Relations Board.
In the House, the AFL-CIO tracked 21 votes, including aid to devastated communities after Superstorm Sandy and legislation to create jobs, eliminate overtime pay, attack project labor and prevailing wage agreements, weaken the NLRB and end the government shutdown.
