AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka Applauds Senator Harkin’s “Rebuild America Act”

The AFL-CIO applauds Senator Harkin for introducing the “Rebuild America Act,” which represent a sweeping and inspirational vision of how we can rebuild our economy on stronger foundations. Senator Harkin’s plan would foster shared prosperity by putting America back to work, rebuilding our infrastructure, repairing our safety net, and insisting that shared sacrifice start at the top—with Wall Street and the wealthiest Americans.

The Rebuild America Act addresses many unmet needs that have been ignored for far too long. The bill would revive the manufacturing sector so we can make things in America again, increase Social Security benefits, and restore the minimum wage’s purchasing power. Senator Harkin recognizes that we can’t achieve fairness if workers lose overtime protections to inflation, if we do not clamp down on rampant speculation on Wall Street, alleviate the cost of childcare for working families, and enact other overdue reforms.

Senator Harkin has always been a friend and champion of the middle class, and the Rebuild America Act is more proof that Senator Harkin is on the side of working families.

And Senator Harkin understands that strong and vibrant unions are essential to creating the good, middle class jobs that can support a family and build a strong economy. It is no accident that economic inequality has skyrocketed and upward mobility for working people has diminished as unions have been under siege from multinational corporations.

While too many in Congress spend their time focusing on handouts and tax cuts for the 1% who broke our economy, the Rebuild America Act rightly focuses on making our economy work for the 99% who have so far picked up the tab for the crash of 2008 and the Great Recession.

The Rebuild America Act will focus our national conversation where it should be—on developing and implementing solutions for problems faced by the American middle class.
