Letter to Congress Urging Them to Provide Federal Aid to the People of Flint, Michigan

On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I strongly urge you to provide federal aid to the people of Flint, Michigan before you leave for the upcoming recess.

It has been nearly a year since the discovery that the water in Flint was unsafe to drink. As a result, an estimated 6,000 to 12,000 children have been exposed to the potentially irreversible health effects of lead poisoning. Almost 100,000 Flint residents still do not have access to safe drinking water, yet the Republican leadership continues to delay action to address this public health crisis. It is time to act.

We urge you to reject the continuing resolution until a funding plan to eliminate the lead contamination in Flint’s drinking water is approved.

Sincerely,

William Samuel, Director
Government Affairs
