Working America Victories

  • Working America fought for and won extensions to unemployment insurance benefits in several states. The extensions are helping more than 572,000 families, including 148,000 families in Florida and 81,000 in Michigan, put food on the table and pay their bills as they seek employment during these troubling economic times.
  • In Pennsylvania, Working America helped save more than 4,500 good jobs from being eliminated by stopping a plan to sell-off public Wine & Spirit shops across the state from moving forward in the state legislature. The fight is ongoing, but Working America is committed to keeping politicians accountable to Pennsylvania’s workers.
  • During the 2011 legislative session in Minnesota, Working America prevented anti-worker legislation that would have threatened as many as 300,000 good jobs in the state.
  • In 2006, Working America helped raise the minimum wage in Ohio and index it to keep pace with inflation. Nearly 270,000 working Ohioans received raises to $7.40 an hour this year as a result of these efforts.
  • In Florida, Working America helped keep $1.2 billion in the pockets of hard-working Floridians this year when the state’s governor, Rick Scott, tried to take it away in the form of a special tax on public employees.
  • Working America is also effective at winning elections, but it only supports public officials who advocate on behalf of working people. Working America has participated in more than 350 elections and won the majority of them. Working America played a crucial role in the elections of working family champions such as Al Franken of Minnesota and Jeff Merkley of Oregon to the Senate.
