IBEW Local 1900 Works to Keep the Lights On in Storm Aftermath

Report by Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO Assistant Mobilizer Julia Kann of Union City

With soaring temperatures and storm damage still weighing on residents, Pepco employees—represented by IBEW Local 1900—are working around the clock to restore electrical power across the D.C. metro area.

“Hundreds of our members have been mobilized to help restore power,” says Local 1900 President Jim Griffin, who told Union City workers are putting in up to 16-hour days, with some coming back from scheduled vacation time to help. "It’s an enormous effort...and our folks are up to the task."

Metropolitan Washington Council President Jos Williams said:

“I want to thank all of the hard-working union members who have spent their Independence Day helping make sure residents have electricity, food and water. From firefighters and EMTs to electrical workers and news reporters, it is thanks to the hard work of union members across the region that we will come back from this storm even stronger than before it.”
