D.C. Metro Council: Helping Workers Build Futures
A union construction and building trades career can put workers on the path to the middle class. The Metropolitan Washington [D.C.] Council Community Services Agency's Building Futures pre-apprenticeship construction program can be the first step on that path.
The next course begins in October and applications are due by Sept. 14. Click here for a brochure, or call 202-974-8223 for more information.
The six-week course is open to men and women in the Washington, D.C., metro area (D.C., Maryland and Virginia) 21 and older with a high school diploma or GED. The curriculum includes building trades core coursework, orientations to green jobs/weatherization and hands-on training at the area’s union apprenticeship schools. Graduates earn several certifications, including the Occupational and Safety and Health Administration’s OSHA 10 workplace safety certification, CPR and first aid.
The core curriculum consists of blueprint reading, orientation to the industry, construction math and an introduction to tools and materials. Students also will receive job readiness training, placement counseling and support from staff beyond employment placement.
