Working Families to Participate in 160 Rallies for a Road Map to Citizenship over Labor Day Weekend

Working Families to Participate in 160 Rallies for a Road Map to Citizenship on Labor Day

On the heels of nearly 200 labor-led actions that already have been held in support of a comprehensive immigration policy that includes a road map to citizenship, working families will participate in more than 160 Labor Day weekend events around the country. Most of the events will focus on calling on House Republicans to quit holding immigration policy hostage and for them to do the right thing on behalf of aspiring Americans.

Text NOW to 235246 to tell Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) you want a vote on citizenship. Standard data and message rates may apply.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka called on House Republicans to pass the bill:

The ongoing deportation crisis leaves millions of low-wages workers subject to abuse by greedy employers while tearing apart families and communities. The best way to end this crisis permanently is for the House of Representatives to stop delaying and offer the majority, which supports real reform, an immediate vote on a bill with a reliable road map to citizenship.

One powerful example of the labor movement’s broad collaboration with community allies is the alliance with PICO California, a network of faith-based community organizations. Labor supports PICO California’s three-week “Pilgrimage for a Pathway to Citizenship,” a 285-mile journey from Sacramento to Bakersfield. That pilgrimage will come to an end on Labor Day in Bakersfield, where the Kern, Inyo and Mono Counties Central Labor Council is hosting a breakfast to highlight the pilgrimage and demand House of Representatives Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) allow an up or down vote for citizenship in the House.

The AFL-CIO and several affiliates (including AFSCME, AFT, Communications Workers of America [CWA] and the Laborers [LIUNA]) already have gathered more than 55,000 signatures for a petition to Boehner and House leadership asking them for a vote on citizenship in the House. The petition will be expanded at Labor Day efforts in an effort to deliver more than a half-million petitions after Labor Day.
