We've heard a lot about how great the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is. But that's just it, we've heard about it but haven't seen the text. As they say, the devil is in the details.
Today, AFL-CIO Trade and Globalization Policy Specialist Celeste Drake sent a message to trade activists:
Any trade deal that pushes our wages down and limits workers’ bargaining power isn’t “progressive” and doesn’t deserve our support. This would be the largest trade agreement in U.S. history, affecting our jobs and wages. Taxpayers deserve to know what’s inside this deal.
We will not sit back and wait for politicians and their corporate buddies negotiating the TPP to finalize an agreement that will only give us more failed policies. We need to be sure this deal doesn’t severely restrict “Buy American” policies that help small businesses and workers in our communities. We also cannot support a trade agreement that will make it harder for us to get the affordable medicines we need for our families by delaying the availability of generic drugs just to protect big pharma’s profits. These policies haven’t helped the middle class in past trade agreements and they won’t help now. And that’s just the beginning of what we’re afraid of.
