Rubio, We'll Pass Citizenship...With or Without You
This week, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) joined what Washington Post's Greg Sargent calls the "slow down" caucus. Meaning Rubio, who is a member of the "Gang of Eight," and a group of Republicans are starting to back away from creating a commonsense immigration process for the nation's 11 million aspiring citizens.
After it was announced this weekend, labor and the business community came to an agreement on an important aspect of an immigration deal, Rubio immediately began to express doubts.
The Washington Post Editorial Board reports:
At first he led the charge, trying to brand an overhaul of the immigration system as his signature achievement. Then, when progress was made last weekend, he backed away, warning that talk of a breakthrough was premature.
Is the Florida senator the once and future darling of the tea party, throwing bombs from the sidelines? Or is he a substantive architect of a workable new system? It’s one or the other; Mr. Rubio needs to decide.
Rubio does need to decide. America's working families support a realistic and reasonable road map to citizenship for aspiring citizens and keeping families together. We'll forge ahead with or without Rubio. Citizenship is the right thing to do.
