President Obama intends to push quickly to fix America's broken immigration system, according to The New York Times, including a path to citizenship—the core of the AFL-CIO's immigration reform agenda.

The Times reports that Obama and Senate Democrats will propose one comprehensive measure rather than take a piecemeal approach and will oppose part-way measures that don't include a direct road map to citizenship.

House Republicans are expected to fight the measure, but, as the Times reports, "groups backing the overhaul say they are bigger and better organized than in the past. Last month, the labor movement, including the AFL-CIO and other sometimes-warring factions, affirmed a common strategy. Last week, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said it would work with labor, Latino and church organizations to pass the overhaul this year."

Immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship not only would raise wages and working conditions for immigrant workers, but would sow benefits throughout the economy for all working families, according to a new report, Citizen Gain: The Economic Benefits of Naturalization for Immigrants and the Economy, by the University of Southern California’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII).
