New Campaign Aims to Give Women a Fair Shot
Imagine getting suspended from your job for seven days because you had to leave work for a half hour and pick up your child when no one could watch her. This is just one example of a major obstacle working women face.
Major progressive organizations came together to kick off the Fair Shot campaign last week, which is a women’s initiative focused on elevating public policy solutions, and to demand action on the real challenges that women face today, including jobs and economic security, health care rights and opportunities for leadership and advancement.
Keynote speakers included White House Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, MSNBC commentator Karen Finney, SEIU President Mary Kay Henry, National Partnership for Women & Families Senior Adviser Judith Lichtman, Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Cecile Richards and Spelman College President Beverly Daniel Tatum.
The focus of this campaign is to place women at the center of federal, state and local public policy debates and to change the conversation that often ignores the key roles women play in our society.
From economic security to health and reproductive rights, to expanding opportunities for leadership and career advancement, the overall goal of the day’s events and the campaign is for women across the country to come together and have their voices heard. Because it’s time women and families had a fair shot at getting ahead, not just getting by.
