If Romney Gets the Wheel, Transit System Headed for Wreck

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan may be spending a lot of time on bus tours between now and Election Day, but their proposals for the nation’s transit systems would leave millions waiting for a ride.

A new website RomneyWrecksTheBus.com from the AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department (TTD) outlines just how ugly a wreck Romney’s proposed 46% cut in federal transit funding would cause.

On the site, you'll learn how a Romney administration would ruin essential public transit services through reckless budget cuts, risky restructuring proposals and how Romney would sell off our transit network to private companies that are only looking to make a buck. The result, says TTD President Edward Wytkind, means “Everyone else can walk.”

We know that the terms “infrastructure” and “efficient transportation systems” do not generate the same passion as other issues being debated in the presidential election, but anyone who works in the transit industry needs to know the facts. A total of 500,000 transit and other transportation jobs would be cut in the first year under the Romney-Ryan transportation budget plan. Romney and Ryan are serial privatizers and outsourcers who want to eliminate public-sector bargaining rights.
