Election Protection Alert: Phony Email Alerts and T-Shirt Bans
The website The Root and AFL-CIO and SEIU staff members in Pennsylvania report an email and Facebook posting seemingly aimed at African American voters warning them not to vote an automatic “straight Democratic” ticket because it supposedly would not include President Obama.
Meanwhile, a Pennsylvania voter was told he would not be allowed to vote unless he removed a shirt with President Obama’s name on it. The AFL-CIO Voter Protection rapid response team reports both issues have been resolved.
Yesterday, The Root reported the email was being circulated in South Carolina, and today, SEIU staffers in Erie County, Pa., said a poll worker in Mill Creek was telling voters not to vote a straight ticket if they wanted their vote for Obama to count. It may be circulating elsewhere.
The Root’s Jenée Desmond-Harris writes that after the warning not to vote a straight ticket, the email instructs voters to select "Barack Obama" first and then the "all Democrats” option.
The main concern raised by the message is that voters confused by the instructions may touch their presidential selection a second time, which would actually remove their vote for that office, the NAACP told WCBD-TV Charleston in October.
In both South Carolina and Pennsylvania, voters can select "all Democrats" or "all Republicans" and their votes will be counted. South Carolina NAACP President Lonnie Randolph told Desmond-Harris that South Carolina has seen other forms of intimidation and misleading information this election cycle, including:
Across the country, here are other updates from the AFL-CIO's voter protection team:
Pennsylvania: Delaware County—signs in suburbs of Philadelphia saying you need voter ID. Officials' leaflets from the state still making the rounds. Lawyers Coordinating Committee will put out a press release on it.
Ohio: Some voter machine problems reported. Cleveland, Toledo and Dayton machines not operating. Optical scans.
Cuyahoga—emergency ballot box full—provisional ballots being placed in provisional box. Also reports of purges. People previously registered and are not on the rolls.
Franklin County—True the Vote has been kicked out of polling locations and their credentials were revoked last night.
Georgia: Fulton County voters have showed up and their names already have been signed.
Texas: Galveston machines not booted on time—African American precincts still not open.
New Orleans: Not accepting out-of-state ID—one location in Orleans Parish board of elections not open.
New York City: Late opening of polling locations—Brooklyn, Queens and Chelsea have extremely long lines.
New Jersey: Some people are turning folks away if they are in the wrong locations despite state directive—Hudson and Essex counties not processing email ballots. Email ballots also have to be mailed in to be counted.
Wisconsin: Reports that there are long lines, not enough poll workers to process and machines are breaking down.
When you get to your polling place, if you are challenged or you have problems, ask a poll worker first. If he or she can't help you, ask to speak with a chief election official. And if that fails, call the AFL-CIO’s voter protection hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) and our rapid response legal team will go into action to address and solve the problems.
You also can text REPORT to 235246 (standard data and messaging rates may apply) and someone from the rapid response team will get back to you for details.
