Made in America: Pet Treats and Products
If there was a union for dogs—and if they had opposable thumbs—I’m sure my two German Shepherds would sign authorization cards and I would respect their majority sign-up choice. But until non-traditional alt-organizing takes a major step outside the box, our pets will have to find solidarity and some tasty treats in a variety of pet products that carry a Made in America union label.
These brand-name products are made by members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers ( BCTGM ), United Food and Commercial Workers ( UFCW ) and Machinists ( IAM ).
What dog can resist Milk Bones? Members of BCTGM Local 36G and IAM Local 330 in Buffalo, N.Y., produce a variety of sizes, flavors and biscuits, including Flavor Snacks, Healthy Favorites, Soft and Chewy Dog Snacks and other assorted Milk Bone-branded dog treats.
After dessert comes dinner, and BCTGM Local 366G in Oklahoma produces 1,500 tons of dog food each day and maintains an excellent safety record. None of its union-made pet food products have been recalled because of contamination, unlike many other pet products in recent years.
Along with BCTGM Local 42 in Fairburn, Ga., members produce 30 different Nestle Purina products, such as Purina Cat Chow and Dog Chow, ProPlan, ONE Products and more.
Other popular pet foods that carry the union label include 9 Lives, Friskies, Kibbles and Bits, Science Diet and Skippy, produced by UFCW members.
In the category of cat necessities we have Litter Green and Fresh Step from UFCW plants, Tidy Cat (BCTGM) and Nestle Purina Pet Litter (IAM).
