Beer is as American as apple pie and baseball, and fortunately, there is a wide selection of American, union-made beers to choose from.

What Does the End of DOMA Mean for Federal Employees?

More information is coming out about the Supreme Court decision that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Last week, we reported Lambda Legal's advice about the ruling and what it means. Now we have specific details about how the decision affects federal employees, coming from the acting director of the Office of Personnel Management, Elaine Kaplan.

Radio Host Rick Smith Goes on Labor History Tour Across America

Progressive radio host Rick Smith, a member of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), and his family, producer Brett Banditelli and writer Pat LaMarche, recently embarked on a 7,800-mile cross-country trip to rediscover labor history. The Pennsylvania resident launched the trip on June 6 at the Talkers New York Conference as a way to counterbalance the domination of radio by conservative anti-labor talk radio hosts.

Andrew Shaw has made a long climb from a 19th round National Hockey League (NHL) draft choice to a member of the Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks. He says his dedication to the grueling hard work that helped him move from the junior league level Ontario Hockey League to the NHL can be found in a faded wristband he dons before every game.

The white lettering stamped on it is worn, but Shaw wears it every day and it's symbolic of his hockey career. It says: "Ironworkers Local 721."

Don't Forget That the Supreme Court Just Allowed Workplaces to Become More Hostile

While the focus in the past week has been on Supreme Court decisions on same-sex marriage, voting rights and affirmative action, two other rulings released this week have made it easier for employees to be harassed in the workplace and reduced the legal recourse those workers have to end harassment. In two separate 5–4 rulings, in which the conservative justices sided against workers, the court made it harder to take recourse against a supervisor who is harassing a worker, and made it easier for bosses to punish workers who complain about discrimination.

LGBT Working Families Celebrate: 'At Last, DOMA Is Overturned'

In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, paving the way for the federal recognition of same-sex marriages. In a separate 5-4 ruling, the court dismissed an appeal by opponents of marriage equality of a lower court decision that found California's Prop. 8 ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. The dismissal of the appeal means that same-sex couples in California can begin getting married again.
