Safety’s Core Issue in N.Y.C. School Bus Strike

Some 8,000 school bus drivers are on strike today to convince New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg that only experienced and trained drivers should be behind the wheel.

Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1181 President Michael Cordiello says:

We want to provide the safest possible transportation to the kids of the city of New York.

Bloomberg is requesting bids on the school bus operations that, for the first time in 30 years, do not contain a requirement that proven, experienced and trained drivers and bus monitors retain their jobs.

New York State AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento says:

Our children deserve the best, and that is what this fight is about. School bus workers are courageously taking on City Hall to ensure the safe transportation of New York’s most precious cargo—our children.
