Workers from the front lines of the corporate-led assault on America’s middle class, including working people from Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin, will be on Capitol Hill tomorrow to describe their struggles to keep their bargaining rights so they can bargain for a middle-class life.

Rosa Blumenfeld, an organizer at the Greater Boston Labor Council (GBLC), sends us this report.

What do you hear from your friends, family and fellow workers when you say the word “union”? What can we do, as young people, in the Boston area to create change? How do we talk to our co-workers about the union? How do we move them to take action for social and economic justice?

After many months of bargaining, UNITEHERE! and Hilton Worldwide have reached tentative agreements at hotels in three major markets—Chicago, San Francisco and Honolulu. The tentative agreements cover nearly 4,000 workers.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal to eliminate bargaining rights for public employees is “blatantly un-American” and “jeopardizes the viability of the people during these tough economic times,”  say Reps. Emanuel Cleaver  (D-Mo.) and Gwen Moore (D-Wis.).

Film producer Michael Moore captivated the thousands of protesters at the state Capitol Saturday, March 5, with his speech, “America Is Not Broke.” He said, the “country is awash in cash. It’s just that it’s not in your hands” but with 400 of the uber-rich, whom he called “little Mubaraks,” who now have more cash, stock and assets than more than 155 million Americans combined.

Nurses at Washington Hospital Center, the largest hospital in the nation’s capital, have been locked out until March 9 following their one-day strike for better patient care last Friday.

This afternoon, the National Football League Players Association and managers extended the contract deadline for another seven days while negotiations continue.

Nurses at Washington Hospital Center walked out this morning for a one-day strike to protest management’s refusal to address their concerns about safe patient care, management’s attempt to erode nursing standards, and management’s unfair labor practices.

John August, executive director of the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions and a native Wisconsinite, sends us this on events there. The coalition is an alliance of 29 local unions representing 90,000 health care workers.

Tease from new NBC/WSJ (Wall Street Journal) poll: 33 percent say it’s acceptable and 62 percent say unacceptable to eliminate state employees’ collective-bargaining rights.
