Workers, Unions Must Be Part of Detroit Solution, Says UAW’s King
UAW President Bob King tells In These Times’ Molly M. Ginty:
If we restructure the city just like we restructured the auto industry, there’s hope that Detroit, too, can see a turnaround.
In a wide ranging interview, King contrasts the action of Detroit’s city leaders who rushed to bankruptcy and “made no effort to sit down with municipal workers and see if all parties concerned could work together” to how workers, their unions and the automakers revived the auto industry.
It’s a far cry from what’s happened with the auto industry, where, to address financial problems, there has been collaboration and communication and agreed-upon mutual sacrifice.
